Laurie Hernandez Tears Up During Her Performance On DWTS In Wake Of Her Grandmother’s Passing

We all know that sixteen year old Laurie Hernandez can handle a lot. She took the Rio Olympics in stride this year, and she’s starring on this season of Dancing With the Stars, where she quickly became a fan favorite. This week DWTS fans discovered just how poised and adult this pint-sized performer could be. When they recorded the video package for this week’s episode, Laurie voiced concerns that she had not been able to spend a lot of time at home, especially since her grandmother was sick. She teared up as she discussed going home to see her soon.

However, the unthinkable happened the day after it was taped. Unfortunately, Laurie’s grandmother passed away, just one day before competition day. Proving that she is literally the most professional sixteen year old we know, Laurie chose to go on with her performance. The audience, after being shown the tape she filmed, was informed of her grandmother’s death just moments before she took the stage.

Laurie and her partner Val Chmerkovskiy nailed a foxtrot, despite the fact that more than once, Laurie can be seen wiping away tears. She said the performance ended up being cathartic. She said, “Instead of having to say anything I was able to dance my way through it. It was kind of like a way for me to let it go.” The pair were given a perfect score, and perhaps one of the best compliments ever given out on Dancing With the Stars. Host Tom Bergeron told her, “That was the most amazing display of courage I’ve seen in 23 seasons.” We couldn’t agree more.
