Elon Musk Will Launch Thousands Of Satellites So Earth Can Have Better Internet

Elon Musk, the inventor of the Tesla, is just full of ideas. You could say that the sky is the limit when it comes to new ideas for Musk, but that simply wouldn’t be true. To Elon Musk, the sky is just a new frontier for ideas, as he announces a new project that could launch over 4,000 satellites into low Earth orbit.

Musk’s company SpaceX is looking to launch thousands of satellites in order to provide high speed internet coverage to the entire world. On Tuesday, the company filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) looking to launch 4,425 satellites into orbit (for perspective, there are currently 1,419 already in orbit). Each satellite would be roughly the size of a car and weigh 850 pounds.

“The system is designed to provide a wide range of broadband and communications services for residential, commercial, institutional, governmental and professional users worldwide,” according to SpaceX.

Currently, less than half of the world has access to the internet, and while Musk’s satellite initiative would at first provide internet to the U.S., Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, it would soon turn its efforts to the international stage.

However, internet is not the only goal of these satellites. Musk has ideas that expand beyond the sky and in fact all the way to Mars. “This is intended to generate a significant amount of revenue and help fund a city on Mars,” said Musk. “So in looking in the long term and saying what’s needed to create a city on Mars, well, one thing’s for sure: a lot of money. So we need things that will generate a lot of money.”

Musk believes that SpaceX has the capabilities to make humans a “multi-planet species,” by first building a city on Mars, and then building a Interplanetary Transport System to easily transport humans between the two planets in 80 days or less.

Musk is excited about the possibility of life on Mars, “Life needs to be more than just solving problems every day, you need to wake up and be excited about the future. Be inspired and want to live.”
