DIY The Cutest Terrarium!

Terrariums are all the rage right now (especially the hanging ones!). Because they’re so trendy, however, they can come at a steep price, which is crazy considering how easy they are to make yourself! You don’t have to have the greenest thumb in the neighborhood to follow these simple instructions and get an adorable terrarium that requires minimum maintenance to keep alive!

First, find the perfect glass container. You can go super simple with a mason jar or really fancy with a gourmet candy display, or land somewhere in between! The container can have a lid but doesn’t require it. Next, gather your materials, like small pebbles, peat moss, activated charcoal, potting soil, and moisture-tolerant plants. These are all things that can be found at a nursery or gardening store, so don’t fret about making multiple trips.

When you’re ready to assemble, make sure everything is as clean as possible, including your hands and the glass container. Bacteria is your enemy when it comes to terrariums. The layers in your jar should go: rocks, charcoal (just a thin layer), moss (pressed down), soil, (the thickest layer), and then plants. Water or mist your plants immediately; the strain of repotting means they’ll need plenty of extra nutrients for the next few days. The goal is to evenly saturate the soil with water or mist, without flooding it. Find a sunny place to keep your terrarium (like a window or tabletop under a skylight) and avoid putting them near air vents.

You’re all set! Rotate the terrarium every few weeks so your plants grow evenly and enjoy!
