Don’t Include These Items in Your Move

Did you know there are items that moving companies won’t move? Some are surprising, but most make sense!

Alcohol

Bottles are easily broken in a move and the contents can damage your other items. If you only have a few bottles, give them to friends. An entire collection? Invest in a custom crate and pay a little extra to transport.

Animals

There are qualified pet movers, and extensive rules for international pet moves. Check the International Pet and Animal Transportation Association website for more info.

Cleaning solutions

Bleach, drain cleaner and other cleaners can be toxic and ruin other items if spilled in transit.

Cooking oils

Like other liquids, oils can leak out and create a mess and also ruin other items in the back of the truck.

Fireworks

Imagine that accident… an explosion not only in the back of a truck, but the truck containing all of your worldly possessions. Not a good idea.

Fuels

Flammable items, including gas AND propane, are no goes. If you have a grill, remove the tank and return it to the vendor for recycling. Drain the gas from your mower and other items to avoid combustion.

Latex or oil paints

Leftover paint in your shed, consider leaving it behind for touch-ups.

Houseplants

If you must move plants, check state laws online or call the department of ag to make sure it’s OK. You may have to inspect the plant for pests and re-pot it in sterile soil before you go.

Perfume

Glass perfume bottles can shatter and a perfume spill could create fumes, stink up the truck and ruin your other items.

Scuba tanks

Scuba or oxygen tanks are highly explosive and cannot be transported unless in a specialty transport.
