Keep Electronics From The Landfill!

By now you’ve probably caught on to the fact that you’re not supposed to dump old appliances or electronics in landfills and ordinary trash cans because they’re bad for the environment. But that’s often where the knowledge ends, and we’re left with all these old electronics that we don’t want but can’t throw away. What to do?

The first thing you should absolutely try is selling it. Sometimes posting to sites like Craigslist can be a hassle, but in the end it’s worth it to make a few bucks off of your unwanted items, especially if you’re replacing them with new and more expensive models. The bonus to this course of action is that the people you’re selling to will actually use your appliances, whether wholly or in parts, which is an excellent form of recycling. You’ll be doing right by the planet AND making a buck or two!

If this isn’t an option for you, the next best thing is to donate the electronics to a Goodwill or similar charity, if they’ll take them. If they won’t, you can check with your community or workplace to see if there’s a process already in place for recycling electronics. You will probably have to hold on to them for a while because they normally only have recycling events on certain days, but it’s definitely worth it to dispose of them properly. And if absolutely none of this works, contact the manufacturer. They are legally required to take the product back for recycling! Going green has never been easier!
