How To Activate YouTube’s Hidden Dark Mode

YouTube has evolved a great deal from it’s origins as a clip sharing site. Nowadays, people use YouTube to watch movies, gameplays, TV shows, vlogs, and all sorts of long format content. If you find yourself using YouTube to consume video media frequently, you’ll be pleased to know that YouTube now has a dark mode! As part of it’s new design overhaul, YouTube new dark mode should help reduce eye strain and enhance nighttime viewing for it’s users. Activating it is as easy as clicking on your YouTube profile icon at the top right corner of the page. From there, you can activate Dark Mode from the drop down.

While Dark Mode has been natively built into YouTube’s new design overhaul as a feature, it’s actually been previously available through Chrome developer tools. Here’s how you could access it previously.

  1. Go to and open Chrome developer tools by hitting Command-Option-I on a Mac or Ctrl-Shift-I on Windows.
  2. Click on the console tab on the panel that shows up.
  3. Paste this line of code into the conosle (document.cookie=”VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE=fPQ4jCL6EiE”)
  4. Hit enter, close the panel and refresh the page.

Now you’ll see more options under your profile icon, including the one to activate Dark Mode. Unlike in YouTube’s new redesign however, this method of activation can only be activated in chrome, and has to be reactivated every time you reopen chrome.
