New Toshiba Battery Is Game Changer

Electric cars are the future, and everybody knows it. However, many people are waiting for the technology to become more like a gas engine… that is, to have lower charging times and convenient charging stations nation (and world) wide. Tesla is working on both problems – and their supercharger network is expanding impressively – but Toshiba may have just beaten them to the punch, battery-wise.

Nine years ago, Toshiba announced huge advances in rechargable batteries, and recently they came out with a game-changer: their new SCiB batteries, which they claim can charge an electric car for 200 miles – in 6 minutes or under! This solves a huge problem for the normal consumer: the 40 minute wait while a supercharger recharges their battery. With Toshiba’s new battery, getting a charge would be about as long as a trip to the gas pump!

Toshiba is (naturally) very proud of their new battery, which uses titanium niobium oxide anodes and can maintain 90% of the original battery capacity after 5,000 charges! Osamu Hori, director of R&D at Toshiba, says, “Rather than an incremental improvement, this is a game-changing advance that will make a significant difference to the range and performance of EV. We will continue to improve the battery’s performance and aim to put the next-generation SCiBTM into practical application in fiscal year 2019.”
