Don’t Do These 5 Things After A Meal

After eating, there are a handful of big no-no’s that you should take into consideration. Here’s a list of some of them.

Sleeping

I know I know, after a big meal we all want to just lie down on the couch and take a nap. This isn’t a good idea though, and while you’re definitely feeling lethargic after a heavy meal, you should probably wait a few hours before sleeping. Your stomach needs time to digest the foods that you eat, and that’s something you don’t want to be doing while you’re sleeping.

Smoking

This is something you probably shouldn’t be doing period, but in case you do like to smoke, don’t do it after you eat. You body needs oxygen for the digestive process and smoking essentially taints that oxygen with nicotine. Smoking one cigarette right after a meal can thusly be as harmful as smoking ten.

Eating Fruit

Fruit is best enjoyed on an empty stomach, since it can be properly digested right away. If you wait to enjoy fruit after a meal, it won’t digest properly and will start to rot in your gut.

Showering

Blood is diverted to your extremities during a shower, instead of too your stomach. Your stomach needs this blood flow to help with the digestive process, so you aren’t doing yourself any favors by showering after a meal.

Drinking Tea

Tea contains tannic acid, which prevents our bodies from properly absorbing iron and protein from foods. Your body needs iron and protein, so if you’re drinking tea after every meal, you’re doing yourself a disservice.

The good news is that you can (and should) still shower, sleep, eat fruit, and drink tea, just not directly after a meal. Give yourself a few hours between when you eat and when you do these activities for optimum benefit.
